Convert PNG to WebP

WebP can keep a PNG’s transparent background at a fraction of the size. That makes it a good fit for logos, product cut-outs and website graphics. Everything runs on your device.

Good candidates for PNG to WebP

  • Photos that were saved as PNG. These usually shrink the most.
  • Product images and logos with transparent backgrounds.
  • Illustrations and banners for your own website.

When to keep the PNG

  • Pixel-perfect screenshots or very small text. Lossy WebP can slightly soften fine edges.
  • Source files you will keep editing. Keep the PNG as the master copy and publish the WebP.

How the conversion works

  1. Your browser decodes the PNG, including its alpha channel.
  2. It re-encodes the image as WebP at 90% quality, with transparency kept, or at the highest quality that fits a size target.
  3. The result panel shows the size saving. Metadata is not copied.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser’s memory and the WebP is handed to you as a download. There is no upload endpoint.

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, and the tool keeps the alpha channel when converting.

Is the conversion lossless?

No. It uses lossy WebP at 90% quality, which keeps transparency but can slightly soften very fine detail. If you need every pixel exactly, keep the PNG.

How much smaller will it be?

It depends on the image. Photo-like PNGs shrink the most; flat graphics with few colours shrink less. The tool shows the exact saving for your file.
