What is AVIF?
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses very efficiently, so websites use it to save bandwidth.
Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (16.4 and later) display AVIF. Outside the browser, support is patchy: many photo apps, office tools and upload forms still expect JPG or PNG.
How the conversion works
- Your browser decodes the AVIF with its built-in decoder. Nothing extra is downloaded.
- The pixels are re-encoded as JPG at 92% quality, or at the highest quality that fits your size target.
- Transparent areas become white, and metadata is not copied.
If the conversion fails
An older browser may not be able to decode AVIF. In that case the page says so instead of producing a broken file. Updating the browser, or opening this page in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, usually solves it. Animated AVIF files are converted from their first frame only.
Frequently asked questions
Is my AVIF file uploaded?
No. Your browser decodes and re-encodes it in memory, and the JPG is handed to you as a download. There is no upload endpoint.
Why is the JPG larger than the AVIF?
AVIF compresses much more efficiently than JPG, so the same picture as a high-quality JPG is usually larger. Pick a size target if you need a small file.
My browser says it can’t read the AVIF. What now?
Your browser’s built-in AVIF decoder is missing or too old, or the file is damaged. Try the latest Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
